Introduced in 2001, the .NAME universal domain name extension is the single TLD supposed to be for personal web pages only. These domains can include personal or fictional names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At first, solely third-level registrations were possible, so if you wanted to register john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration process was liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level domains remained active.
